Maybe it’s the immense yard project I’ve taken up (a 700 foot wooden fence) but I’m feeling kind of funky today. This one didn’t turn out as good as it started. I did another Minute Men sounding tune last week if I’m not mistaken. Maybe I need to break out some old fireHose and Minute Men re-appreciate Mike Watt, one of the greatest bassists ever.
I’m starting to put together the show that Chris Cates & the Master Plan is going to play this summer at several Friday Night Concert style events in several different cities. We always string together four or five disco songs during the night because they’re all in the same beat and usually the same key. I’ve now got about six pretty good disco songs of my own to string together which will be lots o’ fun. This is the latest in this style. It may be the best one yet. “Hot, Cold & Out of Control” is a close second.
This one’s chorus is “You better call a doctor, this is the sickest beat, it’s making people sweat and shake the ice cube’s out their drink”. Thanks for listening!
I’m gradually working on this site as I get a little more free time. Being able to listen to the songs here is much better. Anyway, it’s been nice to be at home, not traveling and being productive. I had a really good time writing and recording this one today.
This is one that just kind of flowed out. The punch line is “Love reigns supreme, It’s just that humans don’t believe it yet”
I’ve been listening to Einstein’s biography driving up and down the mountain for the last few weeks. With all the relativity stuff I have to listen to the same cds over a few times to try to comprehend it. And not being a physicist, I still don’t comprehend it.
But I can write a song about it! Thanks for listening!
Remember back in the day when Chuck Taylor’s were the only high tops you could get. Luckily when I came along Jordan was just starting to change the game of the basketball shoe.
I went to basketball camp one time at Furman in some old Jordan’s and they were like wearing boots.
Anyway, this song is about seeing an old basketball article with a picture of someone I know in short tight John Stockton shorts, Chuck Norris and or florist-like hair, a moustache and “Sweet Classic High Top Shoes”.
Driving home the other night after the Trey concert I pulled some Santana up and jammed it loud to keep me awake. I guess that’s where inspiration for this song came from.
Santana used to be my absolute favorite and still is up there near the top with me. I wish I could see his show in Vegas this year. That would be awesome. I’ve seen him three times, one of which was with Bob Dylan.
If you’re a Santana fan, “Lotus” his live album from Japan is the very best! He also has a crazy concert with John McLaughlin that’s pretty intense too, although it’s mostly just shredding and not much else. His DVD with Trey is similar and good for a watch.
We went and saw Trey Anastasio, my favorite musician in concert last night in Charlotte and I’m inspired to write more than ever. He’s touring with horns and his old band playing songs from his first album which I love.
Anyway, the show last night has been a new source of inspiration for me. I wrote music to several new songs today before finally landing on this one. I must admit I like the funky stuff. It seems like I can endlessly write these disco type songs.
Mainly because that’s what I want to listen to I think.
I can’t believe I haven’t done more songs with my Triton. My Triton is a KORG keyboard that you can basically create anything you want with. I’ve had mine for about eight years and the buttons are literally worn off.
I’m a big NBA basketball fan as you may have noticed and tonight Kobe and the Lakers are playing while I’m working on this song. Great basketball is like great jazz, so I added a little jazzy guitar to the electronic sounds.
I’ll admit it, I’m a huge Kobe and Gasol fan.. And don’t even mention Ron Artest, the modern-day Rodman, one of the greatest personalities of our day and age. Don’t worry I pull for Lebron too. I know as a human being that I’m obligated to do that. The Lakers in 7.
Ah the wind, the recycler’s nightmare. I’m glad I got done with my route before the so called ‘blizzard’ set in. Currently, it is snowing but the wind is breaking it up to a flurry.
Anyway, I bet you guessed correctly that the weather is what inspired today’s song. Actually something Roland Dierauf was saying on WNCW is probably what got it going on.
Anyway, I abided by my usual format of writing the first thing that comes to mind and this is what popped out. It’s pretty silly (which seems to be a trend). I channeled my inner Kool & the Gang for the chorus.

Welcome to Chris Cates.com. I'm an old school independent artist with lots of albums, songs, solar panels etc. This site tries to encapsulate what it is I've been doing since I played my first professional gig at 13. I post a song of the day occasionally from my somewhat excessive original song catalogue and I'm constantly recording new material when I'm not building solar farms, trying to play golf or tennis or taking care of my new twin girls.
