Barbeque Rules this Town. March 23

I can’t believe this is the first song I’ve written about barbeque since I’ve been doing this song a day thing (or anytime for that matter).    On my recycling route and generally driving everywhere in the South, you see a barbeque place every few miles.     When I lived in Athens, Georgia I was quite the connoisseur, that is until I got debilitating ulcers.   But I’m over that now and eat BBQ a few times month and I’ve tasted hundreds of different kinds, even what they call BBQ in remote places like Germany and Amsterdam.

After all my travels,  Hursey’s BBQ in Morganton is still my favorite.   I used to convince Amy to eat there every day when I worked at Schoenen Pool and Spa about twelve years ago.  That’s what I thought of when I wrote this song.

March 5 “Sweet Classic High Top Shoes”

Remember back in the day when Chuck Taylor’s were the only high tops you could get.   Luckily when I came along Jordan was just starting to change the game of the basketball shoe.

I went to basketball camp one time at Furman in some old Jordan’s and they were like wearing boots.

Anyway, this song is about seeing an old basketball article with a picture of someone I know in short tight John Stockton shorts, Chuck Norris and or florist-like hair, a moustache and “Sweet Classic High Top Shoes”.

March 2nd “The Sky for Sale”

Ah the beautiful snow again.  Today it poured snow but the roads never really got that bad.

I basically stayed wet recycling but had a pretty good time doing it.  Singleton and I also got in a much needed practice.  We’re trying to pull off our new album live a little better.   It seemed a little easier when we first recorded it.

“The Sky for Sale” is about our wonderful American consumerism.  I’m shopping for several things right now, so I guess I have shopping on my mind.

Feb 27 “Thank You Carlos Santana”

Driving home the other night after the Trey concert I pulled some Santana up and jammed it loud to keep me awake.   I guess that’s where inspiration for this song came from.

Santana used to be my absolute favorite and still is up there near the top with me.   I wish I could see his show in Vegas this year.  That would be awesome.   I’ve seen him three times, one of which was with Bob Dylan.

If you’re a Santana fan, “Lotus” his live album from Japan is the very best!  He also has  a crazy concert with John McLaughlin that’s pretty intense too, although it’s mostly just shredding and not much else.  His DVD with Trey is similar and good for a watch.

Feb 25 “Sorry for Wearing Plaid”

As usual, after my work week recycling out town and staying away from home a few nights I’m catching up with my songs.

I surprised Adair with a pizza and salad from the grocery store tonight and guess what, that inspired this song.

I’d been watching the PGA tournament and the new kid Rickie Fowler was wearing these awesome Puma pants and that inspired the other half of the song.  I love Puma Golf gear, so you’ll probably see me annoying people on the golf course with those same pants this year too.

Feb 18 “Time I Handle Snakes”

The recycling week is finally over for me which is just in time because I’ve been dealing with some shoulder, finger and back issues which doesn’t mix well with the hard labor.  Luckily it’s usually my hand that holds the pick that hurts and not my fretting hand.

I’ll admit it’s been a little harder to be creative this week.   I think (and hope) it’s mainly due to fatigue.  That’s why I’ve started hitting the treadmill again to get in shape for my work week on my days off.   We’ll see if my new in shape body will write better songs next week.   Quite frankly, I haven’t liked any of the one’s I’ve done for this blog this week.  Oh well, it’s still good practice I guess.

“Time To Handle Snakes” is just a silly bluesy jam about my the possible snake handling in my future.  Personally I’m not a big snake fan, I see a lot of them playing golf and it’s never pleasant.

Feb 7 “Because it’s Super Bowl Sunday”

It’s that one day of the year where all life on God’s Green Earth hinges around a football game.  And it looks like it’s gonna be a good one this year.  The Vatican is even flying a Saint’s flag!!!!!!!

I figured if I’m doing a song for every day this year I’m obligated to write one about the super bowl on Super Bowl Sunday.   That’s where “Because it’s Super Bowl Sunday” came from, it’s for all the guys out there that just don’t want to do the ‘honey-do’s’ today because the game is coming on (at 6:30pm).

The song also gives a run down of some tasty treats that will be over-indulged  by us while staring at the tube today.    I actually don’t eat many of the things I’m talking about, except for maybe today, “Because it’s Super Bowl Sunday”.

Feb 6 “History of Deviant Behavior”

This character in this song reminds me of a lot of folks in my teenage years.  Not me of course.    For some reason all guys have to go through a time period where tearing things up is cool.  Getting away with it was always a plus.

That’s what “History of Deviant Behavior” is about.  That kid you see walking down your block that you know doesn’t have the best intentions in mind.  Maybe this song stems from the kid that threw a snowball at our house the other night and ran up the street.

The music has a little bit of a Curtis Mayfield vibe.        Thanks for listening!!

Feb 4 “Hot Sauce on a Sweet Potato”

It must be time to get funky again because that’s what I’m doing.   It’s so funny when I started doing the song a day thing, I envisioned recording a lot of acoustic songs because it is so much easier and faster to record.  But in general, I have produced full band 16 to 24 track songs instead.    I’m addicted to hearing a song develop with the extra instruments.

I rarely listen to any of the takes I do, so that when I hear the final thing, it’s like I’m hearing it for the first time.

Today’s funky song reminds me of a groove that my buddy Will Clay in Rabun, Georgia used to kick with his band Field Trip.   The lyrics of the song are random ‘party lyrics’ that are based on my current habit of putting Louisiana Hot Sauce on everything (including sweet potatoes).  What can I say I’m gourmet all the way.       Thanks for listening!!!

Feb 1 “Karma Dharma”

This song is the direct descention from listening to a biographical analysis of “Buddha” on CD during my drive back up from Morganton to Asheville today.

It also seems like a good start to February.  I feel like I’m getting a whole new start with my songs.
