I’ve been so busy I haven’t posted anything from my new instrumental electronic / hip hop album that came out in April. Fresh Beet Suite is a collection of songs I composed on my Triton keyboard over the years. I kept them very minimalist to keep the original charm and vibe of the times when they were written.
Some of the 30 songs were recorded in Athens, Lawrenceville, Morganton, Asheville and Atlanta. Basically everywhere I’ve lived for the last fifteen years. The album starts with “Decatur Funk”, a slow rolling hip hop beat, and quickly moves into the upbeat 80’s dance inspired “Lionel Up”. From there it meanders through 27 more tracks that are basically all over the place in musical styles.
You know me, rapper extrordinaire. (lol) This song is a prime example of my mad skills. (lol x2) It’s also my ringtone these days. Nothing like taking business calls to a funky beat. It also makes me miss my piano that’s still in my old studio in Asheville. Anyway, hopefully it will serve as some motivation to some wall flowers this weekend that need to get off the couch and go do something uncharacteristic like dancing. I’ll see you at the club!!
Back in the USA after a great week getting away to England. I saw a lot of great sights and walked about a hundred miles. Back to reality in Atlanta which includes be super psyched that the Mavs won the title!! Time to celebrate with some Country Funk from my “Risky Biscuits” album. This song features my good friend P-Noid on the mic. Thanks for listening!
It’s crunch time for the Lakers today. I hope they can pull it out, I’m not ready to see Phil retire. One thing I know, is Kobe will come to play. This is the song I wrote last year when they were about to win the finals when Kobe wouldn’t let them lose. It’s also one of my favorite songs I’ve done (even though it’s very silly).
I recently reconnected with Coda Baerfider, who I’ve talked about several times on this blog. He’s quite a character and a heck of a lyricist and rapper. This is a creation we made with Kenya Bloodsaw (aka Blood) back around 2001.
Funky and hilarious. Another Coda Baerfider collaboration with Ken Bloodsaw (aka Blood), bringing it home on the last verse. Together Coda and Blood were known as the Tragic Click and they were awesome. I’d love to post their song ‘Private Dancer’ but it’s way too X-rated. Anyway, have a great Monday!!
I did something unique for today’s song. I went into my massive tape archive from my Mealtime Brown days in Athens and pulled the chorus from a 1/2 inch reel I had. This comes from a song I started with Rico Davenport (aka Coda Baerfider) but never finished for some reason. Rico is one of the great talents in the world that has yet to be discovered. He has introspective spoken word stuff and of course tons of hilarious and gangsta songs. You can also hear him on my ‘Risky Biscuits’ album several times on songs like “Don’t U Funk With Me” and the hilarious “First Funk Baptist”. Click here to listen to those songs! Thanks for listening.
Every now and then I make a song that is totally undescribable. I would classify today’s song in that realm.
Adair came home after a football game one night and reminded me of the ‘Awesome’ cheer that cheerleaders do. Of course she was then employed to face the mic for some totally awesome cheers. I figured I would keep the words silly and simple to fit with the general silliness of the endeavor. Also if you’re reading this before eleven in the Charlotte television market, I’ll be singing three ‘365’ songs on ‘Charlotte Today’ on WCNC. It’s gonna be a lot of fun! Thanks for listening!
Welcome to Chris Cates.com. I'm an old school independent artist with lots of albums, songs, solar panels etc. This site tries to encapsulate what it is I've been doing since I played my first professional gig at 13. I post a song of the day occasionally from my somewhat excessive original song catalogue and I'm constantly recording new material when I'm not building solar farms, trying to play golf or tennis or taking care of my new twin girls.
