It’s been nice getting back in the studio. I used to worry that I wouldn’t be able to write the songs. Tonight I realized that that thought never enters my mind now. I usually have several competing thoughts playing out to determine which direction I’m gonna go musically each day. I basically just try not to get in the way and amazingly whatever happens is usually what happens. (I smell a song in that last line).
I can’t believe another month is gone this year. I’ve written a song every day for five months now and pretty much recorded them the same day. I never thought I couldn’t do it but I’ve also been amazed at my sheer will to do it. Honestly, most of the time I’m excited because it’s something new to listen to. I guess that’s my number one suggestion to young musicians. Be a fan of your own music, it makes things a little easier when things get tough.
I dug the bones of this song out of my unreleased archives and rewrote several parts of it. Including the guitar interludes and the verses. “What It Gonna Take” is kind of a rockin’ break up song. I wrote the first version of this song in Amsterdam in 2005. This song features Mike Lowdermilk on bass guitar and Dave Brockway on drums.
We had our first band practice this morning for all of our summer concert series gigs and it’s amazing how many of my ‘365 songs for 2010’ are going to be part of the program. It’s gotten so I could completely use new songs instead of my old staples (which number in the 40’s). We’re sounding really good with the addition of Chris Campbell, our new guitarist and vocalist.
Today’s song is called “Be Careful How Hard You Search”.
