A lovely Sunday in the studio with lots of great sports to watch. I love to have four different things going at once while I work. I will literally be watching basketball on one TV, golf on another TV, be recording on pro tools, listening to iTunes, surfing the internet, writing a song on guitar and a song on keyboard and writing lyrics, while designing websites. For some reason I work a lot better when my work involves eight things at once.
Kind of like how I listen to a book on CD on my iPhone everyday while listening to music at the same time.
Maybe it’s the immense yard project I’ve taken up (a 700 foot wooden fence) but I’m feeling kind of funky today. This one didn’t turn out as good as it started. I did another Minute Men sounding tune last week if I’m not mistaken. Maybe I need to break out some old fireHose and Minute Men re-appreciate Mike Watt, one of the greatest bassists ever.
My gig down the mountain got canceled last night so I spent a late night in the studio writing and recording. I haven’t done that in a while. I did manage to write and record guitar and bass parts for seven new songs. I’m trying to get ahead before my crazy work (and gig) week next week.
So now, I’ve got a bunch of songs to put words to, which is a great luxury to have. “Dreaming Through the Zig Zags” is by no means the best of the bunch from last night musically. It’s just the first one that came up when I sat down to write tonight.
It turned out pretty spacey with a lot of atmospheric delay on the vocals. I need to experiment as much as possible seeing as how I’ve got 300+ songs left to record this year.
The words are kind of a little motivational speech I’m telling myself to hang in there and keep dreaming big. Even if I am doing hard labor for a living.
Thanks for listening!! Hear “Dreaming Through the Zig Zags” below.
Welcome to Chris Cates.com. I'm an old school independent artist with lots of albums, songs, solar panels etc. This site tries to encapsulate what it is I've been doing since I played my first professional gig at 13. I post a song of the day occasionally from my somewhat excessive original song catalogue and I'm constantly recording new material when I'm not building solar farms, trying to play golf or tennis or taking care of my new twin girls.
