It seems like a Parakeet Nelson day today, so I’ll post another one from my ‘Risky Biscuits’ album. I hope you are having a great day!

July 12th “I Mean Really”
Back to work on the recycling truck after a few days off. We had lots of things happening today to make it run not so smoothly. But it’s really not that big of a deal.
This song is kind of about that. Stuff happens but what are you gonna do. I mean really, what are you gonna do.
July 3rd “Angel or Shooting Star”
It’s been nice getting back in the studio. I used to worry that I wouldn’t be able to write the songs. Tonight I realized that that thought never enters my mind now. I usually have several competing thoughts playing out to determine which direction I’m gonna go musically each day. I basically just try not to get in the way and amazingly whatever happens is usually what happens. (I smell a song in that last line).
June 25 “1700 Days Later”
Today is a big day, aside from the countless things I have to do in Asheville, I’ve also got to pick up some glass for the recycling company in Morganton and then, my band Chris Cates & the Master Plan is performing to a big crowd on the Morganton Courthouse Square. The cool thing is, we’ll be playing a lot of songs from my 365 songs project. “Crazy or Crazy in Love” has become our best live song which is pretty cool, especially since I didn’t like it very much when we recorded it.
I sat down this morning and this song popped out in about five minutes. It’s kind of simple but it kind of works. Thanks for listening!
May 4th “Spy Games”
It’s election day today. Primaries. My dad is running for NC House and is in a tough primary. I can’t help much because I’m doing the recycling route.
I guess with all the crazy news and stuff, I composed today’s instrumental. It’s kind of spy movie theme style. I love making songs on the Triton (my keyboard). Thanks for listening!
May 2nd “Light Peeking Through the Clouds”
A typical Sunday in that there’s a ton of great sporting events on TV and a ton of stuff to do. Rory McIlroy my favorite golfer put on the greatest golf exibition in history today in Charlotte, that was pretty cool.
I’ve been writing songs every day but haven’t been able to finish the recordings this weekend. They should all be up by Monday night.
Today’s song is “Light Peeking Through the Clouds”, I’ve been writing songs with a little more vivid in their wordplay lately. I kind of continued on that trend today.
April 29th “If It’s Good Enough for You”
Maybe it’s the immense yard project I’ve taken up (a 700 foot wooden fence) but I’m feeling kind of funky today. This one didn’t turn out as good as it started. I did another Minute Men sounding tune last week if I’m not mistaken. Maybe I need to break out some old fireHose and Minute Men re-appreciate Mike Watt, one of the greatest bassists ever.
Thanks for listening!
April 12 “It’s all Relative, but it’s Relative to What?
I’ve been listening to Einstein’s biography driving up and down the mountain for the last few weeks. With all the relativity stuff I have to listen to the same cds over a few times to try to comprehend it. And not being a physicist, I still don’t comprehend it.
But I can write a song about it! Thanks for listening!
April 6 “You Know You’re Gonna Do it”
An eventful uneventful day today. I took the puppy (Mozart) with me on my 110 mile commute which was a first. He hasn’t hit the recycling route yet, but hopefully someday.
I’m loving these Spring afternoons. I’m recording with the door open all the time. I just cut the mic down low and none of that noise even comes in. Kind of like the way I recorded every song this winter with the heater blasting in the background. Horray for Pro Tools.
Today’s is another one that just flowed out. I wrote all the words to nothing but a click track running at 128 Bpms. Then grabbed the guitar and changed them to 144 Bpms and we were off and running.
“You Know You’re Gonna Do it” is about how everybody pretty much makes up their mind about something the first second that the situation arises. Trust your intuition, it’ll save you a lot of headache in the end.
Thanks for listening!!
March 30 “Bad Reputation”
I was a crazy youth. I did lots of super insane things but luckily I never got a legitimate bad reputation. I always managed to stay out of trouble and or getting caught.
This song’s about a reputation preceding a new romance. “Now you know my secret, I’m a bad bad man, but you’ve got to admit it, it’s the most fun you ever had”.
