I started to go rent an aerator and buy fertilizer to get my yard going the right way this year. But I got some sage advice from a lawn guy who made me realize that that would mean much more mowing and maintenance. Don’t get me wrong, I actually love yard work and my back yard is a 16 hole chipping course complete with elevated greens, fairways and rough. I’m pleased to say that I do everything gas-free once again. No gas will be consumed in the mowing of my yard this year.
Anyway, I guess that’s where “Mow Mow Mow the Grass” came from. I actually wrote the catch phrase on the recycling route the other day while I was watching people mow yards all day.
It’s that special day of the year for baseball fans. Opening day of a long and brutal season that must be incredibly hard to keep focus. I’m not as big of a baseball fan as I used to be, but I do sing the national anthem a few times a year at minor league parks from time to time.
And I’ve seen a game at Fenway.
“Opening Day and PBR” is a funny song about a team that’s turning it around because they’re going to drink beer instead of liquor this year… and wouldn’t you know it, they get on a one game winning streak!!
What do you do when a complete stranger falls down right in front of you and you want to laugh but you also don’t want to hurt their feelings. Or someone does or says something really embarrassing that they wish they could take back because it made everybody laugh.
That’s what “Kind of Funny, But Not Really” is about. What do you do when you’re really embarrassed except laugh along with everybody. Otherwise you’re just going to be pissed and then nothing will make you feel better.
America’s Funniest Home Videos created a monster I guess.
Valentine’s Day, holiday or not? Daytona 500, definite holiday for millions of people (especially in the South).
Every so often they both fall on the same way and it brings lovers closer together or really pisses one of them off. I’m lucky enough to have an average interest in Nascar. I typically watch the last ten laps of a race and passively pull for Tony Stewart and Dale Jr. Although the banter from DW and the commentators is usually pretty funny throughout the race.
And Valentine’s Day is always a good reason to go out and have fun with my wife.
Anyway, “Nascar and Valentine’s Day” is a song about a husband who wants to celebrate a romantic Valentine’s Day but his wife is too tied up with the Daytona 500 because Little E (Dale Jr.) is on the pole.
He pulls a twist at the end of the song and makes up for it.
I’m still running behind but I did write this yesterday. I didn’t get around to recording it until this morning. It took about an hour to record which is still a little longer than I would like to take but my drums are getting a lot better already.
I’ve played and recorded drums five times this week which is five times more than I played them all last year. This blog is definitely going to get my off instruments more tight.
“Good Liver” comes from something I misread on a medical flyer while recycling the other day. It turned into a funny song with a tragic message about that friend of yours who loves to party.
I finally broke out the distortion pedal on this one.
Welcome to Chris Cates.com. I'm an old school independent artist with lots of albums, songs, solar panels etc. This site tries to encapsulate what it is I've been doing since I played my first professional gig at 13. I post a song of the day occasionally from my somewhat excessive original song catalogue and I'm constantly recording new material when I'm not building solar farms, trying to play golf or tennis or taking care of my new twin girls.
