As this day goes every week, I’m worn out from recycling and ready to go to bed at a decent hour. I was inspired to get home and write today after listening to Bob Dylan’s ‘Chronicles’ auto biography on my iPHone as I worked today. What an amazing story his is. His first recording session was as a harmonica player for Harry Belafonte. That’s pretty cool.
We go see him play every few years and I’m the only one that gets it. He plays his voice like a jazz instrument and people don’t realize that.
Some phrase Dylan says in the book is similar to the title of “Things happen for a reason for no reason”. That along with Dylan’s biography and the George Washington biography I’m also listening to inspired this song.

Success!! I’ve now finished all of the rhythm guitar for the Chris Cates & the Master Plan “Follow the Feeling” album. It’s been tough working it in with the song a day thing and my other projects. It’s kind of wierd spending lots of time on a song, like I need to do with the Master Plan album, after doing these one a days as fast as I can. That album is for the big market so it has to be perfect. These songs can be a little loose and can also be any sound I want.
I’ve fallen in love with this way of writing and recording because I’m not held back by normal conventions.
Anyway, “Geometrically in Perfect Touch” let me play a little bit of the Euro beat on the drums and it turned out to sound a little bit like The Sea and Cake, a band I really like a lot. The words build on a parallel between love and mathematics (a subject through school I didn’t pay much attention to).
This song is one of my favorites that I’ve ever done. Thanks for listening!!
Playing catch up once again with the songs. Busy week recycling in Morganton while entertaining company (and myself) from out of town in Asheville every night.
We went out and caught some great jazz down town at Mo Daddy’s. There’s a lot of good players in Asheville and any selection from ‘Kind of Blue’ is always transcendent to see live.
Anyway, today’s song is probably inspired by my hurting body. I worked a lot faster than usual this week so that I could get home faster and I’m a bit sore for it. That and lack of sleep directly lent to my foul mood the last few days, so today I am trying to work it all out and get back to feeling good. My wife Adair has a blog based on feeling good every day you should check out if you haven’t. followthefeeling.wordpress.com/
So basically “A Little Extra Love Today” is that I’m feeling like I’m needing a little extra today as I record guitar parts for another 6 or 8 hours.
Two weeks in already and fourteen new songs. There’s definitely been ups and downs in the songwriting.
As to be expected with my work and travel schedule. There’s several good ones like “Snow Day”, “Sunday Afternoon Blues”, “Sleeping Sweetly” and my favorite “The Sweetest Thing Is Everything”. Alright back to work. 50 weeks to go!
Today’s song is my lullaby tribute to love. Have a great day!
Well, this is my first late post. After an exciting day recycling in the big city of Hildebran and a near death experience, I got home late. Which left me only a little time to hang out with Adair before I left for my bi-annual poker game with my golfing buddies. Long story short, I should have stay home and saved the money. Oh well, I had a good time though.
I got home a little after midnight and started working on a tune but after getting up at 5:30am that morning I didn’t get something recorded before I started to crash.
Anyway, this is what came from those efforts last night and my efforts (and choppy drumming) from this morning.
It’s called “Love Your Girl” and it’s a story song about not forgetting to remember that sweet love in your life.
Welcome to Chris Cates.com. I'm an old school independent artist with lots of albums, songs, solar panels etc. This site tries to encapsulate what it is I've been doing since I played my first professional gig at 13. I post a song of the day occasionally from my somewhat excessive original song catalogue and I'm constantly recording new material when I'm not building solar farms, trying to play golf or tennis or taking care of my new twin girls.
