New Avenue. December 12th

We’ve got the first decent snow here today.  About four or five inches so far.  Luckily I made a late night run back from Georgia just before it started getting heavy.  I’m evidently continuing on my ‘change’ theme this week with today’s tune.  I should be singing about how I thankfully won’t be doing any driving today.  Thanks for listening!

April 23 “Doctor Sick Beat”

I’m starting to put together the show that Chris Cates & the Master Plan is going to play this summer at several Friday Night Concert style events in several different cities.  We always string together four or five disco songs during the night because they’re all in the same beat and usually the same key.   I’ve now got about six pretty good disco songs of my own to string together which will be lots o’ fun.  This is the latest in this style.   It may be the best one yet.   “Hot, Cold & Out of Control” is a close second.

This one’s chorus is “You better call a doctor, this is the sickest beat, it’s  making people sweat and shake the ice cube’s out their drink”.   Thanks for listening!

April 21st “What if Time Doesn’t Exist”

Once again the Einstein biography I’m listening to inspired another song.   It’s 18 discs long, so I’ve been listening to it for quite a while.  Einstein was a great man.  Not only for science, he was indispensible in his pursuit of equality for all races and nations.

Anyway, as he argued with his colleagues, the hypothesis that time didn’t actually exist came up.  I guess that’s what helped this song to pop out.  Thanks for listening!

April 16th “To the Center of the World”

My brother came up to work on my house today so we streamed the new Slayer album off of myspace.  It’s awesome!   They just keep getting better.    Anyway, I actually wrote this song while listening to Slayer, my brother hammering and during website project I was trying to finish.

It kind of just leaked between the cracks.   I haven’t done a metal-ish song lately, so I was definitely due.

Thanks for listening!

April 1st “Mad Crossover in D”

I’m starting out the month of April rocking it out on the piano.  This is a song I’ve messed with for a while but never sat down and finished it.  Today, on the first day of a new month, I felt like getting it done and putting it out for posterity.

I love that about this song a day thing, I get to finish a few old scores with songs (no pun intended) and actually put them to bed and of my brain space.   Believe me, I need as much brain space as I can get.

This song started back in my rap producer days.   As you can see instead of rapping them I turned it around completely and played and sang solo on the piano.   Thanks for listening!

Feb 16 “A Discernible Glow”

Once again a majorly chilly day recycling house to house, this winter is one to remember.   I enjoy the cold for the most part and have not complained about it because that would make me feel colder in the long run.

Anyway, today’s song is about the aura that some people project.  Certain people have a glow around them when they enter a room.   Whether this a psychic connection or just them projecting more energy than others is to be argued.

That’s the just of “A discernible Glow”.  I think I ripped a riff off of another song of mine, I guess I’m plagiarizing myself.

Feb 10 “Something’s On the Way”

Windy again and once again the curbside recycler’s nightmare.  I was chasing papers all over the street in front of the Waldensian Bakery in Valdese today.  But you do what you have to do, the business is slowly growing and that’s always great to see.   Check out SimplyGreenRecycling.com if you haven’t already.

Today’s song is one of my uplifting motivational type songs.  My wife and I have a lot of irons in the fire and we’ve been both waiting to get over that next hump for quite a while.   But we both now realize that we also have to enjoy where we are.

That’s kind of what “Something’s on the way” is about.

Feb 8 “Caught Up in the Controversy”

Tonight’s song was fun.  I had a crazy day recycling in Morganton drove back Asheville and now that it’s gonna snow again tonight I’ve got to go back down the Mountain to make sure the good people can get their pick up rain or shine (I’m hardcore like that).

But I managed to come out here to the studio and write this one in my very short time allotment (I do have a home life too).

When I sat down at the computer and saw the yahoo headlines about Peyton Manning being a poor sport for not shaking hands last night after the Super Bowl and they actually penned that as a controversy  I laughed.    Which then led to writing and recording “Caught Up in the Controversy”.  This song is not about Peyton, it’s more about the really narcissistic celebrities who tend to create controversy to fuel their career.

I wish I could create controversy, I admit I love when I get press too.        Thanks for listening!!

Feb 3 “Geometrically in Perfect Touch”

Success!!  I’ve now finished all of the rhythm guitar for the Chris Cates & the Master Plan “Follow the Feeling” album.  It’s been tough working it in with the song a day thing and my other projects.   It’s kind of wierd spending lots of time on a song, like I need to do with the Master Plan album, after doing these one a days as fast as I can.   That album is for the big market so it has to be perfect.   These songs can be a little loose and can also be any sound I want.

I’ve fallen in love with this way of writing and recording because I’m not held back by normal conventions.

Anyway, “Geometrically in Perfect Touch” let me play a little bit of the Euro beat on the drums and it turned out to sound a little bit like The Sea and Cake, a band I really like a lot.  The words build on a parallel between love and mathematics (a subject through school I didn’t pay much attention to).

This song is one of my favorites that I’ve ever done.    Thanks for listening!!

Jan 28 “Lookin’ Fine All the Time”

Just getting yesterday’s song up even though I wrote it today.  The song I wrote yesterday is still in the computer but I haven’t been compelled to listen to it, so it must not be mind blowing.

This one’s a jazzy soul piece about “how I find you look so fine”.   I’m loving my snare drum sound.  Adair had fun lending some synth solos and backing vocals.

I’m still going with my first thought best thought thing, so it’s always interesting to see what the subject leads to when I start writing the song.

Thanks to  Jared Callahan for lending me a great vintage amp for the weekend.
