Today was a day of intense physical execution from around 8 to 5, going as fast as I could without stopping, picking up recycling from one house after another (111 in all). Today usually takes eleven hours, but I got ‘r done today, mainly because I had to deal with my latest phone issues. I lost my iPhone and undoubtedly that’s a very expensive endeavor. That’s why today’s song is another one of my pep talks to myself. This one is kind of moody and I kind of like it. I actually added more stuff to it but took it off to achieve this kind of minimalist sound.

August 24th “You Gotta Start Somewhere”
Wouldn’t you know it, I was trying to be quick and efficient tonight after a punishing day on the recycling route and a 5:00 am wake time tomorrow morning; but, I decided to make it hard on myself. I had envisioned at least a small backing band on this, but I recorded the music differently than what I wrote. So I went back and started all over again. “You Gotta Start Somewhere” right?
August 18th “Life C.O.D.”
Tough day recycling in the heat once again. When is this summer gonna end? I’m ready to write some songs about the fall, my favorite time of year. I put out a concept album back in the day called ‘Fall’. One of my many cassette only releases. It was inspired by Bob Dylan’s ‘Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid’ Soundtrack. That is a great record.
Anyway, this song is kind of funky and probably not one of my best. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.
July 20th “Can’t Stop Wanting What I Want”
I was fooled by cloudy skies this morning on the recycling route, thinking it was not going to be hot. What a beggar’s dream that was. That’s kind of what today’s song is about. There’s no reason to think about being in cool weather all day long or it’s just torturing myself. Also, it’s even worse to constantly think about how hot it is all the time (like I did today). I used to work in Georgia though, this really isn’t that bad. On top of that, it’s 130 degrees in Baghdad for criminey’s sake!
July 9th “Don’t Regret the Future”
What a day to be one of those days. Actually, it’s been a pretty decent day. I’m at home for the entire weekend which is an extremely rare thing. I should probably work on my massive back yard fence project but the A/C feels too good today after picking up recycling in the 100 degree heat all week.
Anyway, we’ve been thinking about the future a lot the last few days, so that’s where this song was born. Thanks for listening!
June 17th “Better than Good for Nothing”
Another scortcher working outside on the recycling truck today but we made it through and that part of the work week is over. Now it’s gigging time, three shows this weekend in three different places (2 states). Today’s song is just what popped out when I sat down to write today. I just started the song and it flowed right out. I’ve been trying to write with the mandolin more. Thanks for listening!
June 10th “Some of that Something Something”
What a week. I’m finally back home after an entire week out of town. Needless to say today is catch up day on the song a day project. I’ve actually had them written and some partially recorded, so I should be posting three more songs today.
This week is worth noting I guess (since this blog thing is supposed to be somewhat personal). I started out with three heavy days recycling in Morganton (55 miles away), then after work Wednesday, my band performed at a grand opening for Audubon Place apartment complex in Arden, Thursday night we performed on the Morganton square for the Young Professionals then went across town and guest hosted at Momma Sarah’s a new venue, Friday I played in a golf tournament with my brother (shot 65 2-man captions choice) then played a show at Yianni’s, Saturday we teed off early at Quaker Meadows (shot 66 2-man best ball) and lost by a stroke, I then went to Mimosa Hills Golf course and performed for their Member Guest, finished and ran out of there to step on stage 15 minutes later at Momma Sarah’s for a 4 hour Chris Cates & the Master Plan show. It was a lot of fun actually and besides a few yelled profanities at Quaker, I had a pretty good week.
“Some of that Something Something” is another funky one. I seem to be trending that way lately.
June 9th “What Did I Did and then I Did it Again”
What a week! Hardcore recycling and six gigs packed into four days. Oh did I mention I’m also playing in a two day golf tournament too. I guess it’s summertime because I am busy.
Today’s song is a fun one. I guess I’m starting to rap now. Look out Eminem. Somehow, I don’t think he’s worried.
May 26 “You’re Falling in Love”
The tire exploded on the recycling truck yesterday afternoon, so it’s been an interesting week. We still managed to get to 220 houses in Hildebran today and pull in about 6000 pounds of stuff. The perfect background for me to come home and write an ambient love song right? This song is more of a mood piece than a normal vocal song. It’s meant to capture that feeling when you first fall in love.
May 24th “If Only I Was Here Right Now”
This is my favorite time of year. The NBA Playoffs. I retire to my studio in late at night to do my songs and while watching grown men do battle on the hardwood. I have a huge advantage in watching the games because I tend to pull for the team with the ball. So I’m always a winner. If only it were that easy in all aspects in life.
The title of today’s song came somewhere on my recycling route today. I was listening to Andrew Jackson’s biography but I definitely don’t think it came from there. Thanks for listening.
