Finally a few sunny days!! Hopefully we’ll get some spring like weather now.
Tonight’s song is about how as we get older we let some of our more romantic habits go. We’ve got to remember to have fun and be more carefree. Too often we get bogged down by real world problems and forget that we’re here to be joyous and to live like children.
As usual, after my work week recycling out town and staying away from home a few nights I’m catching up with my songs.
I surprised Adair with a pizza and salad from the grocery store tonight and guess what, that inspired this song.
I’d been watching the PGA tournament and the new kid Rickie Fowler was wearing these awesome Puma pants and that inspired the other half of the song. I love Puma Golf gear, so you’ll probably see me annoying people on the golf course with those same pants this year too.
I need to listen to my song from yesterday more and feel like I have more time in my day. I had a late gig last night and slept a little late which cut into my studio time today. As did that 18 holes at Reem’s Creek Golf Course where I fired a mid winter 73, maybe my best score in February to date.
Anyway, “I Like the Way it Looks But I Hate the Way it Shows” is a silly almost heavy metal number. I honestly meant to spend more time on the song but that’s just the way it goes I guess.
Well, this is my first late post. After an exciting day recycling in the big city of Hildebran and a near death experience, I got home late. Which left me only a little time to hang out with Adair before I left for my bi-annual poker game with my golfing buddies. Long story short, I should have stay home and saved the money. Oh well, I had a good time though.
I got home a little after midnight and started working on a tune but after getting up at 5:30am that morning I didn’t get something recorded before I started to crash.
Anyway, this is what came from those efforts last night and my efforts (and choppy drumming) from this morning.
It’s called “Love Your Girl” and it’s a story song about not forgetting to remember that sweet love in your life.
It’s getting a little tougher now. I got up this morning around 6 drove the 50 miles to Morganton and picked up recycling for around 85 places with Dad. It was 17 degrees this morning but it really didn’t seem to bad. I think I have more trouble when the temperatures are in the 40’s than the teens.
It must be those four years I spent in Boone.
Today’s song reflects nothing of what I have experienced today, it’s just what came out between 6:30 and 7:00pm, my alloted time to write tonight. I’m still sticking with my ‘first thought best thought stategy’.
“Soul Bread” is a story song that’s a bit tragic and a bit humorous with a little secret ‘Belle and Sebastion’ jam at the end.
In 2010, starting today, Jan. 1st, I am going to write a song each day and post it here and write about the experience in this popular “blog” format which I am still weary of with my Gen X DNA.
My criteria will be
1. The song has to be around a minute long minimum
2. It has to be from good effort (I can’t phone it in, however, I can record it on my iPhone)
3.With lyrics is a plus but I can contribute instrumentals (I do love my Triton keyboard)
4. I can collaborate (making music is fun with other folks )
So here it goes. Today I decided to write a cheesy feel good anthem about getting things kick started for 2010. I’m very optimistic about this year and this song is a little pep talk.
WordPress is not making it easy to upgrade their services to play mp3’s, so I will have to redirect to my main website to play the song. In the future I hope to be displaying the mp3’s for people to upload free directly from this blog.
Welcome to Chris Cates.com. I'm an old school independent artist with lots of albums, songs, solar panels etc. This site tries to encapsulate what it is I've been doing since I played my first professional gig at 13. I post a song of the day occasionally from my somewhat excessive original song catalogue and I'm constantly recording new material when I'm not building solar farms, trying to play golf or tennis or taking care of my new twin girls.
