It’s hard to believe it’s been seven years since Chris Singleton and I recorded this in my studio in Asheville. A lot has changed since then but he’s still my best bud and favorite musical collaborator.
“Dead Man’s Suit” is the title track from our album of the same name and has always been one of our favorites to play because it has a fun bass line and harmonica part. You gotta love the key of F# major. Thanks for watching!
It’s been nice getting back in the studio. I used to worry that I wouldn’t be able to write the songs. Tonight I realized that that thought never enters my mind now. I usually have several competing thoughts playing out to determine which direction I’m gonna go musically each day. I basically just try not to get in the way and amazingly whatever happens is usually what happens. (I smell a song in that last line).
This is my favorite time of year. The NBA Playoffs. I retire to my studio in late at night to do my songs and while watching grown men do battle on the hardwood. I have a huge advantage in watching the games because I tend to pull for the team with the ball. So I’m always a winner. If only it were that easy in all aspects in life.
The title of today’s song came somewhere on my recycling route today. I was listening to Andrew Jackson’s biography but I definitely don’t think it came from there. Thanks for listening.
I unleashed my white legs on the world today. Spring is officially here, the shorts are out!
I’ve now got a new studio mate, a new puppy named Mozart, to go along with Wario, my cat and long time studio mate. It’s great to get moral support from them. They always give me good feedback. Lionel my other cat drops by the studio from time to time to lend imput but he’s heard too many loud noises in here and isn’t as keen on the studio scene.
Today’s song is “The Truth Might Hurt” it’s the first thing that popped out after my bad outing in the money game at the golf course this morning. Never play golf for money after four hours sleep and an out of town gig.
Thanks for listening!!! Click the play icon below to hear it.
My first full day to do things in the studio for more than a week. I spent the morning recording a song in Garage Band for a contest for City Mac and 98.1 The River, a damn fine radio station I might add. Garage Band is an interesting program. I’ve still never seen a sampling program as good as the old ACID program for PC. That’s what I used to sample with way back in 1999.
Anyway, today’s tune is called “Clean Living with a Few Dirty Thoughts”, once again inspired by “The Tao of Willie” that I’m listening to.
Welcome to Chris Cates.com. I'm an old school independent artist with lots of albums, songs, solar panels etc. This site tries to encapsulate what it is I've been doing since I played my first professional gig at 13. I post a song of the day occasionally from my somewhat excessive original song catalogue and I'm constantly recording new material when I'm not building solar farms, trying to play golf or tennis or taking care of my new twin girls.
